All the glitz and glamour surrounding the Secret Shopper has hit a high note since it has become more popular in the late 1990’s. Shopping at trendy places and getting to keep the free merchandise, eating out for free, and even sleeping in five star hotels with no charge, and the only thing you’re required to do is to report back on your experience would appeal to anyone. Sounds too good to be true? Well, some of it is, but most of it is not. You see, there are a lot of technicalities that shroud the image of a Secret Shopper that most are unaware of.
Step 2
Before we get into the technicalities of
the Secret Shopper, you have find out how to even be a
Secret Shopper. Anyone over the age of 18 can be a Secret
Shopper. Go on-line and search for Secret Shopper agencies
that are on-line and sign up for a free account. The
preferences will be entirely up to you if you want to do the
research on your own for free or pay someone else for their
research of some top leading companies who you can join up
with. Be careful of scams that require you to pay to sign up
with them; however, don’t confuse it with other companies
who are offering you their information for a price.

Step 3- Digital Camera
The next thing you need to know about being a Secret Shopper is that it’s more than just reporting your experience back to who ever hired you. They will require specifics, such as what was said in the conversation and the descriptions of the people who you interacted with and what was going on around you at any given moment. They will even require you to act out specific scenarios, dress a certain way, speak a certain way, and if that’s not enough, you will be graded on your report that you send back to them. They will require you to have good writing and descriptive skills and to follow instructions carefully and exactly. If you do some things wrong, such as out yourself as a Secret Shopper, you will automatically be disqualified in that shop and will not be reimbursed. Some shops will require you to have a digital camera so you may upload images into your report, or a scanner/fax machine so you may send them a copy of your receipt(s) for reimbursement. You must also be computer savvy enough to know how to upload images on to your reports, which is simple enough as clicking a button.
Step 4- Pay up front
With all shops, you will be have to pay upfront first and depending on the agencies pay-out policy, you will not be reimbursed for another 30 to 60 days from completion of your shop. Most agencies will require you to set up a PayPal account where they will have your payments sent to after the allotted time frame. Once you have completed a shop and you have sent in your report, you will be given a grading point depending on how thorough your report was. That point will be with you forever and will either be against or for you based on how your report was completed (i.e., perfect grammar, followed directions to the exact point).
Step 5- Pizza service
When you’re starting out, especially on your first shop, you may sometimes find that you are only allowed the less appealing shops. However, you have to remember that you must prove yourself to the agency before they will allow you to be assigned to a more important shop. What types of shop? Well, the shops can range from anywhere from seeing how informative an employee is on their own products or their selling capabilities to how clean a five star restaurant’s bathroom’s are to how fast and efficient a delivery person is with a pizza chain.
Step 6- Nights at five start hotels
Now, the technicalities shrouding the glitzy free dinners and free nights in five-star studded hotels fall on the qualifications the agency has placed around the shop. Sometimes, your income must meet a specific amount, your age, your average scoring and amount of shops you have completed, and sometimes, if you have been a certified shopper. A certified Shopper must order a DVD or go to a seminar where each person will be given their own certificate number to qualify themselves as a certified Secret Shopper. The average pricing for the DVD (if you do not live close to a Seminar location) is around $100. I will show you how to get the DVD and Certified.
Step 7- Rising to the top
Secret Shopper’s are very real and complete shops daily. However, the road to be a successful Secret Shopper, such as the one’s you have heard of reported on the news and magazines have worked hard and diligently to be successful as with any career. If this is your true calling, you must work hard completing your shops with full responsibility and possibly will need to be certified to find the bigger and better shops.
